What is RSS?

RSS Feed Icon

In short, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Originally known as Rich Site Summary, RSS allows people to subscribe to a website in order to receive updates when new information is added to the site.

RSS Subscriptions

An RSS subscription is similar to any magazine subscription. You decide the magazines you want to receive and sign up for a subscription. Each time the magazine publishes a new issue, its sent directly to you.

In the same way, an RSS subscription gives you immediate access to updated content on websites that you read regularly. Rather than having to visit each individual website to check for updates, you’re notified when each site has new content to see.

RSS Readers

RSS readers are applications that allow you to maintain RSS subscriptions to websites. Some of the more popular applications for Windows include FeedDemon and NewsGator while NetNewsWire remains the reader of choice for OS X users.

If you like to keep up with your subscriptions while you’re on the go, web based services such as Bloglines allow you to maintain your subscriptions online so that you can access them from anywhere.

RSS in Firefox

The Firefox web browser has integrated support for RSS bookmarking. While viewing a site with an RSS feed, the orange RSS icon will appear in the browser. This allows you to create a live bookmark which creates an RSS subscription within Firefox. Each time you open your browser you can check for updated content on all your favorite sites.

The Convenience of RSS

The abundance of RSS feeds on news sites and personal weblogs has made it easier for web readers to keep up to date with websites without having to visit each one every day. RSS readers proactively deliver you updates on the sites you’ve subscribed to. If you’re a frequent internet browser, try one of the readers mentioned above and you’ll have more time to surf while taking less time to search.
